Chairing a Master’s Thesis Defense on Seismic Risk to Pipelines
Prof. Dr. Ahmed Askar Najaf from the Department of Geophysics chaired the master’s thesis defense of Ms. Maryam Issa Hassan Al-Rubaie, an employee at the Ministry of Oil, Directorate of Engineering Projects. The thesis, called “Numerical Studies to Assess Seismic Activity on Underground Oil and Gas Pipelines,” was defended at Cankaya University in Turkey.
The study employed numerical modeling to evaluate how seismic loading affects buried oil and gas pipelines and to inform engineering measures that enhance structural safety. Its outcomes carry scientific and geostrategic significance for prospective joint projects between Turkey and Iraq, particularly those involving new pipeline corridors designed and operated with robust protections against the region’s active seismicity.
